The Source of our Sapphires

The mine produces deep blue sapphires as well as exceptional “fancy sapphires” in rich yellow and many shades of green. These so called ‘fancy’ colors are some of the most exciting and rare colors that mother nature can provide and are the result of exposure to different natural chemicals during formation.

Natural Multi Colored “Parti” Sapphires

There are also “parti-colored” sapphires that show combinations of two or more different colors. Each stone is unique, and the color of the stone can change when viewed from different angles. Those who purchase them do so for their individuality and personality. Our parti colored sapphires are unheated, and their color is entirely the result of natural processes.

The Capricorn Sapphire mine is open-pit, and no tunneling is required. We mine in phases, excavating small areas to expose the sapphires. We then refill each area, replacing the topsoil and vegetation as part of our environmental rehabilitation.

Only The Top 1 %

The Capricorn Sapphire mine produces hundreds of thousands carats of sapphire each year. Just a fraction of that yield—less than 1 % percent—are selected to become the top-quality finished sapphires shown on this website. As Richlands are involved in each step, from mine to market, we can guarantee each sapphire's absolute origin and authenticity.

Step 1:
Looking for beauty

We excavate dirt, pebbles and stones from the ground, and enormous trucks take this mixture to our processing plant.

Step 2:
Breaking up & separating

At the processing plant a huge drum scrubber begins the process of separating valuable sapphire rough from the mined material by breaking up any large lumps. Only a few carats of sapphires are eventually found per ton of earth which enters the plant.

Step 3: Jigging

The jig washes and sieves the mix to create what we call ‘concentrate’ , a refined mix of rough sapphires and small pebbles.

Step 4: sorting

Skilled ‘graders’ sort the concentrate by hand, individually picking out each precious sapphire.

Step 5:

Experts hand select the very best of our naturally-colored gemstones to turn into jewelry-ready, cut gemstones.

Step 6:
precision cutting

Skilled cutters polish each sapphire and examine it carefully; then master cutters precision cut each sapphire to best showcase its individual beauty. Our sapphires are cut to the finest standard, well above that of most sapphires commercially available.
